Biography

I earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. I began my studies as a studio Fine Art major in painting at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. I studied at Cumberland School of Law; attended Northern Arizona University, Arizona State University, and University of Arizona taking my coursework after acceptance to the PhD program in Medieval English Literature at UofA.

I teach English Composition, Literature and Humanities courses here at Estrella Mountain Community College. I have served as a Residential Faculty member at Estrella Mountain since 1990 and have taught college and university courses over 42 years for Samford University, Northern Arizona University, Central Arizona College, Central Arizona Regional Law Officer's Training Academy, Scottsdale Community College, Glendale Community College, and Estrella Mountain Community College.

I enjoy hiking, golfing, painting/drawing (graphite, pen/ink, watercolor, acrylic, and oil), building (furniture, stained glass windows, and scale modeling), reading (pretty much anything and everything), listening to music (again, a wide range), watching cinema (independent, sci-fi, horror, action-adventure--and comedy of course), building miniatures, playing board games, and I love spending time with my wife, our family: a greenwing macaw, a cat, and German Shepherd.

Academic Interests
My ongoing academic interests are pretty wide-ranging. My focus is on the works and mythology of J.R.R. Tolkien, the Arthurian literary tradition, Medieval English history and literature, and Anglo-Saxon language and literature. I am interested generally in history, animal behaviors/intelligence, world mythology, and the range of the humanities.
