Although this is my first time teaching at Community College, I have trained many VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) volunteers in my three years running West Valley VITA program. My back ground is in accounting and I started to volunteer for VITA program for military families at first, and soon found out that I like preparing tax returns. I have since then became a West Valley VITA program manager and I have recruited hundreds of volunteers and trained them to prepare individual & families tax returns for low to moderate income families around west valley. First year, 97 volunteers, second year there were 125 volunteers and last tax filing season, there were total of 157 IRS certified VITA volunteers throughout 12 west valley VITA sites. They in turn prepared 2,266, 2,850 and 3,428 tax returns respectively. Working with the volunteers they brought back to community approximately over $12 million dollars back to the communities and saved estimated over $2 million dollars in tax preparation fees. I do enjoy the experience of training my volunteers and loved the chance to teach the same informational knowledge to college students to be able to help not only themselves for the rest of their life, but help others in need.
