Janaea Lyn McAlee is Residential Dance Faculty at EMCC and is the AAFA in Dance degree faculty advisor. Her artistic philosophy and educational pedagogy is rooted in creating and facilitating collaborative and community based dance projects. She brings this approach to the EMCC dance program and as artistic director for DancEstrella, which has a focus on student choreography. Her article Collaborative Dance Making: Philos0phy and Practice is being published in the Dance Education in Practice journal in 2020.Prior to relocating to Phoenix, Janaea was Assistant Professor of Dance and Performing Arts Program Coordinator for Cecil College in Maryland from 2006-2012. While there she designed and directed an interdisciplinary performing arts degree program and was actively involved in the opening of a new arts center. Janaea was Founding/Artistic Director of both Dance Matrix and Convergence - Dancers & Musicians, Ltd. Her work as a dancer, choreographer and teacher has been presented nationally and internationally in France, Scotland, Poland, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, among others. A third generation Isadora Duncan dancer and historian, Janaea actively presents Duncan workshops throughout Arizona.She has presented at the 2017, 2015 and 2013 Isadora Duncan International Symposiums and currently serves as Co-Chair for the Isadora Duncan Archive Committee.
Conference presentations include Creating Across Disciplines: An Integrative Approach To Performing Art Education at The League for Innovation in Community Colleges and Calling as Career: The Intersection of Life and Learning in the Performing Arts at the Association for the Advancement of Community College Teaching (AFACCT). In 2012, Janaea (a.k.a. Janaea Rose Lyn) published “Dance This Notebook!” with artwork by Laura Higgins Palmer. A contributing writer for Choreoclinic (www.choreclinic.com), she has also written an e-book/text, Designing Your Life in the Performing Arts! A Resource for Dancers, Actors and Musicians and the article Choreographer/Composer Collaborations was published in “Choreography and Dance, An International Journal.”
