Michael.Farabee
Michael J. Farabee was born in Columbus OH, raised in Arizona , and currently serves as a Residential Faculty Member at Estrella Mountain Community College in Avondale ,Arizona . After completing his high school education at Phoenix Central High, Dr. Farabee attended Arizona State University , earning a B.S. in Biology in May 1978. Following a stint as a piece-work silversmith, Mike returned to ASU where he worked on palynology of the late Cretaceous of Wyoming with the late Professor James E. Canright , earning his M.S. in Botany in May 1983. He then moved to Norman ,Oklahoma and began working on his doctorate with Professor John J. Skvarla. While at the University of Oklahoma, Mike realized the need for a broader knowledge base and pursued an Interdisciplinary Ph. D. degree, awarded in May, 1988 in Botany & Geology for his dissertation work on the fossil pollen group Triprojectacites. His next position was as a post-doctoral researcher with the Byrd Polar Research Center and Department of Botany with Professors Edith and Thomas N. Taylor at The Ohio State University (1987-88), where he studied the Permian-Triassic palynology of Antarctica.
Desiring a new challenge Dr. Farabee was hired at Gordon College (GA) to develop a new program in geology. He served with distinction there from 1988-1991. He has also held positions as Visiting Assistant Curator for Palynology (Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, summer 1990), as well as a short-term summer post with DeKalb College (GA, summer 1991). In September 1991 Mike returned to the Phoenix area as the founding science faculty member of Estrella Mountain Community College .
Dr. Farabee has received three teaching awards: the Jasper P. Baldwin Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (University of Oklahoma 1983-1987, in 1987), Outstanding Faculty ( Estrella Mountain Community College Center, 1993), and NSIOD Faculty Electeee (2001). In addition to research on Cretaceous-Tertiary and Permian-Triassic palynology , Dr. Farabee has served as Assistant Editor and later Journal Editor for PALYNOLOGY, the annual journal of the American Association of Stratigraphic Palynologists.
Mike's recent activities have concentrated on development of multimedia. He was also President-elect of the Estrella Mountain Faculty Senate (1996-97) and Senate President (1997-98). In May-June 1998 Mike was one of 17 Maricopa Community College Faculty to teach at Wuyi University in Guangdong Province , People's Republic of China. In 1999 he returned to China and studied the geology of the Three Gorges region. During the summers of 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2003, and 2006 Mike was one of the faculty mentors for the NIH Bridges Program at Pima Community College /University of Arizona in Tucson. He also is a graduate faculty member in the CTEL at ASU West and a Visiting Scientist at ASU in the Paleobotany Laboratory. In 2006 and 2007 he also dove coral reefs/carbonate in the Bahamas and Belize.
Dr. Farabee retains interests in silversmithing , lapidary, camping, fly fishing, ceramics, and world peas.
